How To Design a Custom Sign for Maximum Visibility

When you spend the money to have a custom sign created, you want to make sure passersby are going to notice it and take action. With the following principles in mind, your sign will end up printing better than expected with the maximum results.

Legibility

If your sign can't be read, no one will pay attention to it. Text style matters and the experts at your custom sign shop Washington should be able to direct you to the fonts that work best. Try not to use more than two fonts in a single design and stay away from italics. They can be difficult to read on signage. Bold text, large lettering and bullet points can help increase the readability of your custom sign.

Contrast

You want to avoid a sign that blends into the background of the area where it will be used. A green sign on a green background will be lost in the view compared to a red sign on a green background that offers high contrast. It's typically easier for people to read dark lettering on a light background, but if you do use a dark backdrop, make sure to increase the contrast with lighter text.

Size

Your sign needs to be bigger than you think you need. Factor in the distance, height and angle where the sign will be posted to help you figure out the correct dimensions. For the best sign size, determine how big the letters on your sign need to be first and then expand the border size around that measurement.

3x5 Rule

Avoid clutter on your signage by following the 3x5 rule that says to use three lines of five words or five lines of three words so your message is clear, concise and understood immediately.

Remember these design ideas when creating your custom sign to provide the best possible readability.
