Tips and Advice for a Smooth Long-Distance Move

When it comes to moving home, there are a number of things to consider. It isn’t just about choosing a house, picking a moving day, and off you go. There is so much more to plan, organize, and think about! Throw in moving a long-distance away, perhaps even abroad, and you have a whole host of other things to bear in mind.

If you are making this year the year that you move to somewhere new, then having some tips for making a whole house move much easier on you, especially when moving to somewhere far away. There may be some meltdowns, as well as issues along the way, not to mention extra costs. But if you plan well, it can help a great deal. Here are some tips to help.

Make Space

Moving across the country isn’t cheap. And the more vans that you have to hire to get your things there, or pay the shipping to send things, the more that it will cost you. So it makes a lot of sense to make as much space as possible, and take as little as possible with you. You could:

  • Sell any large pieces of furniture that you are not attached to before you go. They could also be given away if you simply want to get rid of them.

  • Declutter your clothes and other belongings. Moving is a great time to get rid of things that you no longer want or need, so make the most of it and don’t take things thousands of miles with you if they don’t need to be taken.

Sort your new home first

If you are in a position to get to your new home, before having to leave your old home, then it can really help. You can get some things organized at that end, such as utilities, internet, phone line, and so on so that you’re ready to just move in right away. You could also do any decorating that might be required, such as putting up new curtains or painting some walls. It is easier to do when a house is empty, that’s for sure.

Take time off work

It can be tempting to just move and get on with life as normal. But a big move can really take its toll. Not only that, but moving to a new area, and perhaps a new time zone, can take some adjusting. So book time off, so that you can unpack and settle in, as well as get to know your new local area.

Expect meltdowns

Moving is tough on everyone, from children to adults. A big move can mean moving far away from friends and family, as well as schools and jobs that you’ve gotten used to and enjoyed. So be prepared for some tears and tantrums. This will pass, but it helps to be prepared. Keeping busy is a good way to be distracted so that you can focus on your future life, rather than the life that you are leaving behind.
